Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a medication used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and other conditions that affect the stomach and esophagus. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
Nexium functions by blocking the effects of H+/K+-ATPase, a chemical responsible for producing the acid in the stomach. This action reduces the amount of acid in the stomach and esophagus, thus reducing symptoms of Zollinger-Ellison, GERD, and other conditions. It is often prescribed as part of a combination therapy with a medicine such as H2 blocker or acid-suppressing medicine to help control symptoms.
Nexium can also cause mild side effects such as:
Serious side effects can include:
If you experience any of these side effects and they do not go away after a short time, stop using this drug and get medical help right away, (often sooner that sooner).
